Comforting

Alice Walker’s new collection of poems, Absolute Trust in the Goodness of the Earth, presents a mix of good and so-so poems, all of which will engage your mind and heart. Many of the poems reflect the world following 9/11, and the ways in which Walker expresses her feelings through words allow readers to find a comforting place of our own. Here’s a sampling of poems from the collection:

Just at Dusk

Just at dusk

I ventured out

Beyond my street

Two tawny cats

Waist high

Ran out to greet me

Or so I thought.

Sticking out

My hand

To pat

The larger one

I looked into its

Eyes and saw it intended

To eat me up.

Is this always

Where the lure

Of wildness

Leads?

Blood on the trail

The hand of the seeker vanished

Down some "tame"

Creature's throat?

The Moment I Saw Her

The moment

I saw her

Looked upon

Her

Without

Fear

& to admire

Her many

Legs

& her beauty

Only

In that

Moment

The

Entire

History

Of basket making

Was revealed

Tome.

The old ones

Would have

Studied

Her.

They would have

Started with

Reeds

Aging

Your job:

Every morning

To look

Into

The mirror

To note

In spite

Of everything

Life is humming

Along.

To say

In wonder

&

Fit

Anticipation:

There if is!

Aging. Life.

What has it done?

What's it doing now?

What is it going

To do?

The Anonymous Caller

The anonymous caller

Begins

His diatribe

You shitty

Bitch

&

Ends it

With

A threat:

I Know

Where

You

Live.

I can tell

By his

Voice

That he is

Young

&

Unaware

That

As far

As Calamity

Is concerned

As far

As Death

Is concerned

All of us

Share

The same

Address;

All

Of us

Live

In the

Same

House.

Many of the poems in Absolute Trust reveal the meanings of house and home, and create a special place for readers to spend some time in refuge and in pleasure.
